You can continue Christ’s work through giving a legacy

In the lands of the Bible, the work that Christ began among the poor and needy over 2,000 years ago continues today among projects supported by BibleLands. Over the years, much of this work has been made possible not only through generous donations and regular lifetime giving, but also through the gift of a legacy.

Legacy income is vital to the continued existence of BibleLands. As one of the few organisations focused exclusively on working for the vulnerable and disadvantaged in the lands of the Bible, we have offered effective long-term support to a wide range of projects for over 150 years.

We owe a great debt to these individuals who have given legacies and we honour their memory every year at our Annual Service and in our Annual Review, as well as recording their names in our Book of Remembrance. We pass this book every day as we enter our office and it reminds us of their contribution – without their legacy, one in four of our Partner Projects could close.

The gift of a legacy is an offering of hope for the future and a positive way to make a real and lasting difference.

It is important for all of us to make a will
Top of Page

Only one person in three makes a will. It is not difficult, nor is it very expensive, but it is very important. It gives security to those you love and care for, whether they be family, friends or the charities you admire. It gives you the comfort of knowing that when you no longer need it, your money will be used in the way you would wish.

Without a will, the law dictates how your estate is divided. It can often prolong an already difficult time for those left behind, as your money and property may not automatically pass to your next of kin.

To make a will, we recommend the services of a solicitor. They will use the proper legal terms to ensure that your wishes are met. They are not unduly expensive and if you do not have a solicitor, perhaps a friend or relative might recommend one. It is quite usual to ask solicitors to give an estimate of their charges before going ahead.

Solicitors will need certain information in order to draft your will so it is a good idea to have this ready in advance. You might like to check with them to ensure that you understand what this includes.

Typically this will be:

  • The value of your assets – house, contents, savings, car, any life insurance policies

  • How much you owe – mortgage, hire purchase, loans etc

  • Who will carry out your final wishes (Executor) – often a relative, a friend, a solicitor or a bank

  • If you have young children, who will act as their Guardian

  • The full names and addresses of any individuals or organisations you may wish to leave a bequest to.

Check with them before your visit to make sure you have everything required.

If, after providing for your family and friends, you decide to leave a legacy to BibleLands, we would prefer your solicitors to use the following wording:

1. For Residuary Legacies (a percentage of your overall estate):

'I give the residue or X% of my estate to BibleLands (registered charity number 1076329) of The Old Kiln, Willow Chase, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire HP15 7QP. And I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or appropriate officer should be a complete discharge to my trustees.'

2. For Cash or Pecuniary Legacies (an amount of money decided by you):

'I give to BibleLands (registered charity number 1076329) of The Old Kiln, Willow Chase, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire HP15 7QP the sum of £……(amount in words) free of all taxes for the general charitable purposes of BibleLands and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or appropriate officer should be a complete discharge to my trustees.'

The money BibleLands receives from Legacies is vital to BibleLands. It enables me to offer long-term support to our Project Partners, support for which we are often the only source.

Legacy gifts are a very special way of making sure that Christ’s work in the lands of the Bible is able to continue today, tomorrow and into the future.

If or when the time is right for you to make a will, after providing for your own family and friends, please consider a legacy to BibleLands. I will ensure that it is spent wisely, so that your gift will offer a future to fellow Christians continuing Christ’s work in the place where He lived.

How one woman continues to make a difference…Top of Page

Miss Orgler supported BibleLands for more than 20 years.

She was particularly interested in the Nazareth School of Nursing and helped several student nurses to complete their training during the 1980s through her regular giving. In 1989, she sponsored her first child at the Anjar Armenian Evangelical School in Lebanon.

Sadly, Miss Orgler died in September 2000 but the effect of her support is still being felt in the lands of the Bible. The child she was sponsoring at the time of her death is now 15. He is still supported through her legacy and now corresponds with her friend and executor of her will.

Miss Orgler left a proportion of her estate to BibleLands, to support her sponsored child through his education and to help Christians in the lands of the Bible as they minister to those in need.

Her gift continues to help to secure the future for projects supported by BibleLands, ensuring that the disadvantaged, the poor and the vulnerable will continue to find hope in difficult times.
