Summer 2006 Appeal

Support the Four Homes of Mercy

“The Palestinian Authority has only recently paid care fees due in 2004. Every month I worry about finding the money to pay the staff and I have been unable to pay the water bill for the last two years.”

Dr Ibrahim El-Ziq, the director of the Four Homes of Mercy, shared these grave concerns with us recently. Every week he visits the authorities to plead for the money due to the Home, despite the difficulties caused by travel restrictions in the Holy Land. Every day the situation becomes more critical.

He and his dedicated team care for 90 individuals with chronic physical disabilities in the Home in Bethany. They work tirelessly to offer the best possible care, as shown in the factsheet [391kB pdf]. Dr El-Ziq has worked night and day to improve the fabric of the buildings, the staff training and the wellbeing of the patients, but the political situation in Israel and the Occupied Territories is beyond his control.

Travel restrictions mean that staff may take hours to reach the Four Homes each day; rampant unemployment means that families have difficulty paying any contribution towards care costs; and state funding is less and less forthcoming. In these troubled times it is the staff who go without, not the patients.

Dr El-Ziq is a very widely respected international health care expert who has worked both in the UK and for the EU in the Middle East. Yet, he has chosen to dedicate himself to serving those living at the Four Homes, those who are considered ‘expendable’ by some in a land where most are struggling to survive.

BibleLands has partnered the Homes for more than 20 years. We have seen it become a centre of excellence, a place where love and care shine through. We cannot ignore its current plight.

Dr El-Ziq has asked for our help. To fund a patient at the Four Homes costs £420 a month, £98 a week or £14 a day. Please give what you can to support him.
