A message from Nigel Edward-Few, Director: As we shortly move into the season of Lent and toward Easter, we at BibleLands are focusing on the social care that our Project Partners on the ground provide to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of their societies, especially during these troubled times in the region. On a global scale, it is invariably the young and the elderly – the tragically most vulnerable and marginalised – who fall victim to poverty and hopelessness. BibleLands’ Project Partners are often the only people who can provide the vital care and support needed by these vulnerable individuals – whether young or old – that allows them once again to lead normal lives and to look forward to a future with optimism. Many of the children with whom our Partners work in Lebanon and Egypt live in desperately poor conditions existing as a legacy of war and years of deprivation that has created broken or dysfunctional families. BibleLands’ Project Partners provide holistic social care through homes and schools, giving these children a safe place in which to develop that is free from poverty and hopelessness. Whether it be with the very youngest at the Hadana Kindergarten, in Cairo, where children receive daily meals and a broad education that includes social skills; at The Cedar Home, in Beirut, that provides a secure and loving environment of care to some 30 young girls who have lost one or both parents; or at Beit-el-Nour, in Beirut, where adolescents who have already suffered abuse or have been driven to a life of crime are offered rehabilitation and the chance to make a new start; every child or young person is given the encouragement, practical and emotional support that he or she needs to learn, grow and become an independent adult. Equally, several of our Project Partners offer new hope to those at the other end of their lives – the elderly who have endured years of poverty and hardship. With the encouragement of BibleLands’ donors, they offer support where there would otherwise be no hope. “Whatever you did for one of the least of these of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25: 40) The Boulac Social Centre, in Cairo, provides vital medical care, emergency provisions and social support to those especially vulnerable in the slums of Cairo –particularly elderly women – giving them an opportunity to find dignity and a purpose in the twilight years of their lives. In Lebanon, the Al Kafa’at Foundation, in Beirut, also provides essential support to those elderly people who face the additional burden of disability. To those who would not otherwise have any access to other care, it also provides daily meals, medical and social care and support. The fact sheet (301kB pdf) gives more details of the work done by just a few of BibleLands’ Project Partners. I would encourage you to spend a few moments looking through it to see just how our Project Partners make a real difference. Lent is often a time for re-focusing and re-assessing our values and for thinking of how we can respond to Christ’s call to support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged of our brothers and sisters. Can I invite you, as we approach Easter, to think particularly of those in the Middle East who find themselves in such difficult circumstances through no fault of their own? With your help, BibleLands-supported projects can bring real meaning to this season of New Life and New Hope. For the second year in succession, as we have been able to cover our administration costs through other income, EVERY PENNY OF WHATEVER YOU CAN SPARE will be used to support and encourage these vulnerable people – whether they be young or old and whatever their nationality or faith. Thank you in anticipation for your financial and prayerful support. Yours sincerely |
