As we look
forward to a hopefully warm UK summer after last year’s continuous
downpours, our Overseas Partners in Egypt and those that they serve
are looking forward with trepidation to yet another unbearably hot
summer, where the problems of daily life are even further
exaggerated by the inescapable heat. With no cooling rain since
March and none expected until late October or November, over the
next four months, temperatures will be in the mid 30s Celsius (95
degrees Fahrenheit or above) by day and around 21 degrees Celsius
(70 degrees Fahrenheit) by night.

The vast majority of Egypt’s poor population will not be able to
afford cooling or air conditioning systems to reduce their discomfort.
Many will struggle to make a meagre living in this tremendous heat;
many are trapped on the margins by disability, unemployment or
illness, for which there is little or no treatment available or indeed
affordable.
-
In Upper Egypt,
more than 60% of the population live below the poverty line.
95% of Egypt’s population live on just
5% of the land. Already densely overpopulated areas will be swelled
even further, as, over the next 15 years, the population of the
country will increase by 30 million and by a further 20 million over
the following 25 years.
20 million Egyptians live in housing
that, at best, is grossly inadequate and, in some cases, is dangerous
or lethal, in danger of collapse, or infested with insects that bring
otherwise preventable disease.
Clean and
adequate water supplies and fertile agricultural land are limited.
In response to
these huge problems, BibleLands has increased its support for
its Overseas Partners in Egypt by 174% in the last three years, but
recognises that there is so much more that needs to be done.
 It may seem a
huge task, but I am mindful of the saying:
“We cannot change the whole world but
we can change the world for one person at a time …”
As God values
every individual person, whatever their ability or circumstances, as
a unique reflection of His creation, we at BibleLands, with
our partners in Egypt are passionate about bringing hope to those
people who have no hope – the poor, the vulnerable, the
disadvantaged and the marginalised – as together we provide
education, health care and community development programmes.
This summer, will you help to change
the world for those communities that our Egyptian partners serve? If
you can, please
donate online, or send whatever you can afford by cheque or
charity voucher (with your name and address, or supporter reference,
on the back) to: Egypt 2008 Appeal (W), BibleLands,
FREEPOST, PO Box 50, High Wycombe, Bucks, HP15 7BR.
I
guarantee your help will change the world for one person at least;
together, we can change the world for many more in Egypt. Thank you.
Yours sincerely
