More Infomation:
Founded: 1922
Principal
: Ms Maral Deyirmenjian
Beginnings:
Many Armenian refugees fleeing from the first genocide in Turkey in 1915 settled in camps on the outskirts of Beirut. Over 1.5 million Armenians were massacred and those that fled settled in nearby countries, including Lebanon. This School, that has become one of the most well-established in the Lebanese Armenian community, was founded in a refugee camp. Ten years later it moved to its present location in a poor suburb to the north-east of Beirut.
Activities:
Education
- Classes have no more than 30 pupils, a much lower ratio than State schools. The Lebanese government curriculum is taught, with a special emphasis on health education.
- All of the School’s pupils are from Armenian Christian families and additional lessons are given in Armenian culture, history and language. The school day starts with assembly in the onsite chapel.
Training
- In-service training is a high priority for all the teachers, and this service is often extended to include all the other Armenian Evangelical Schools in the area.
