Operate a day and boarding school to help children grow academically, spiritually, physically and mentally within a supportive environment.

350 children, between 4 and 18 years old.

More Information:
Founded: 1947

Beginnings:
The village of Anjar is an Armenian settlement almost 30 miles east of Beirut. About 3,000 people live in this agricultural village and work on the surrounding farms. In 1939 thousands of Armenian families fled from Turkey seeking refuge. They were living in tents without food, work, schools or medical attention. Swiss missionaries brought relief and began their work in 1947, which included opening a school for 43 girls in the corner of a church.

Activities:

Education

  • Around 150 of the students are boarders while others live in the village and travel to school daily. The School aims to help each child to grow academically, spiritually, physically and mentally.

  • Most of the children are from Armenian Christian families, but children from other faiths and nationalities are also welcomed and accepted. They come mainly from poor families, who can only make a small contribution towards the school fees.

  • The boarding section was opened in 1955 and the children live in one of three ‘homes’, where a family atmosphere prevails.

  • The School teaches the national Lebanese curriculum to a high standard, including computer studies, music and sports. Pupils also receive lessons in Armenian history and culture. The main language is Armenian, but the children also learn Arabic and English.

  • Extra curricular activities include sport, walking, social events, music and art. All the children join in morning chapel before school starts and the boarders have evening prayers.
