More Infomation:
Founded: 1952
Director: Mrs Salwa Zananiri
Beginnings:
Elizabeth Nasir, a Christian social worker and daughter of a Palestinian clergyman, opened her home to 25 destitute girls after being shocked to see so many homeless and unwanted girls wandering the streets of Jerusalem. The girls learnt a variety of skills including housekeeping, literacy, embroidery, religious education and music. The School of Rawdat El Zuhur, meaning ‘garden of flowers’ was founded in response to an urgent need for Palestinian education for under-privileged boys and girls.
Activities
- The School follows the government curriculum and languages include Arabic, English and French.
- Teachers emphasise education as an enjoyable process and encourage extra curricular activities that help develop students’ abilities.
- Rawdat El Zuhur has a special emphasis on music and drama – students can learn to play a musical instrument and all the children take part in drama performances on special occasions.
- Many of the children participate in an annual summer camp run by the Helen Keller Centre (another of BibleLands’ Overseas Partners).
- Staff meet parents regularly and make frequent home visits, enabling the School to further support the children, their parents and the local community.
- Every new child is tested for dyslexia and other learning difficulties before they start, so that any remedial work can begin during the summer holidays. The School uses the services of Spafford Children’s Centre (another of BibleLands’ Overseas Partners) for this and other specific educational and medical needs.
