More Information:
Founded: 1952
Beginnings:
The Evangelical Church in the El Saray district of Alexandria began as a ‘summer church’ for people visiting the seaside during the summer. It runs a variety of social work programmes, two of which – Fairhaven School and a medical clinic – are supported by BibleLands.
Activities:
Education
Fairhaven School opened in 1990 for children with learning disabilities.
Those between 5 and 12 years old are taught social development, mobilty, self care and safety skills alongside academic subjects. Older students are trained in vocations such as assembly work, sewing, woodwork and gardening.
A daily meal is provided to every student and fees are charged according to each family’s means.
Fairhaven School also provides a home for older students who find it difficult to travel, have deprived family backgrounds or are vulnerable to abuse.
Health
The Medical Clinic provides eye care, including basic treatment, simple operations, glasses and medicine. More complex eye disorders are referred to local opticians or to Alexandria Hospital.
